Insight to Liability: The Double-Edged Sword of A.I.

By: Matt Nanney

Let’s just get this out of the way: If you’re running a company and you’re not actively exploring how AI can impact your bottom line, keep you competitive, or give you a competitive edge, I don’t know what kind of vacation you’re on, but I’d like the brochure.

We’re at a strange inflection point. Generative based AI is easily the most powerful tool most businesses have never actually used properly. And like any powerful tool from chainsaws to spreadsheets, it can do beautiful things or real damage in the wrong hands.

I’ve Seen This Movie Before (And It Was a Horror Film)

I worked at IndyMac Bank, the second-largest mortgage lender in the U.S. for the years leading up to and during the financial collapse. I was an underwriter, project manager, and supervised a construction lending team in operations.

We had data.

We had models.

We had brilliant people.

But we also had blind spots.

We trusted numbers, statistics and systems we didn’t fully understand. And that trust came at a very real cost. I see the same pattern happening now with generative A.I. Only this time, it’s moving faster!

Introspection: The Real Key to Success.

You have to break problems, objectives and needs down to their absolute core.

You need to question your assumptions.

You need to be brutally honest about what you know… and what you don’t.

Because if your inputs are flawed, biased, or vague?

The outputs won’t just be useless — they’ll be confidently wrong.

The Risk: Looks Right, Isn’t Right

When A.I. generates something that feels right, whether it’s a number, a sentence, or a full-blown strategy, most people don’t question it. That’s where things go off the rails. Especially when the math looks clean, or the writing sounds “smart.” But if the reasoning behind it was flawed from the start? You’ve just packaged a mistake in a PowerPoint and passed it up the chain.

Basic Safety Strategy

You don’t need to avoid generative A.I. — you need to approach it intentionally.

That means:

•              Building a real A.I. governance & training strategy.

•              Creating review workflows for data privacy, liability and risk management concerns that are inherent in the underlying science of how AI works.

•              Training people to ask the right questions before they ever touch a model.

•              Knowing the causes & Spotting “hallucinations” before they hit your client’s inbox or snowball out of control.

If you’re ready to stop guessing and start doing this right, let’s talk.

I help large organizations harness A.I. Safely, smartly, and strategically.

Because the “artificial” part might be impressive…

But the “intelligence” still depends on you.
